ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Brunel University of London is a public research university located in the Uxbridge area of London, England. Named after the renowned Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the institution has a rich history rooted in technical education. Its origins date back to 1928 with the establishment of Acton Technical College. In 1957, the advanced teaching segment of the college was renamed Brunel College. It later became Brunel College of Technology and, in 1962, was awarded the status of a College of Advanced Technology. A new campus was constructed in Uxbridge beginning in 1965, designed in a brutalist architectural style by Richard Sheppard, Robson & Partners. The university officially became Brunel University in 1966 after receiving a royal charter, aligning with the UK’s initiative to expand higher education during the 1960s, and is often referred to as a plate glass university. In 2014, the university adopted the name Brunel University London and reorganized into three colleges: the College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences; the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences; and the College of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences. In 2024, it became the 17th member of the University of London and adopted the trading name Brunel University of London. The institution currently hosts over 16,000 students and 2,200 staff members. For the 2021–22 academic year, it reported an income of £271.3 million, including £22.4 million from research grants and contracts, with expenditures totaling £311.9 million. Brunel University of London has been recognized for its excellence in education and research, winning the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2011. It is a member of several prominent organizations including the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the European University Association, and Universities UK, reflecting its strong academic reputation and global engagement.
