COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Counselling (Children and Young People) is structured to provide a comprehensive foundation in counselling theory and practice, with a strong focus on working with young clients. At level 6, students begin with the core module Introduction to Counselling, which establishes the fundamental principles of the profession. At level 7, the course builds advanced knowledge and skills through a series of specialised core modules totalling 160 credits. These include Initial Counselling Practice: Theory, Ethics and Context, which introduces professional frameworks and ethical considerations, and Child and Young Person Development, which explores developmental stages and their impact on counselling approaches. Developing Counselling Practice: Theory, Ethics and Context and Consolidating Counselling Practice: Theory, Ethics and Context allow students to deepen their practical and theoretical understanding while enhancing professional competence. The module on The Mental, Emotional and Psychological Health and Disease of Children and Young People provides essential insights into the complexities of mental health issues, while Diversity, Cultural, Familial and Contextual Dynamics ensures students are prepared to work inclusively with varied backgrounds. The program culminates with the Counselling Children and Young People Research Project, enabling students to critically engage with research and apply evidence-based approaches to practice, preparing them for professional accreditation and employment.
