COURSE CURRICULUM

This course in the built environment offers a well-rounded and progressive structure that builds essential knowledge and skills over three years, preparing students for professional roles in construction, quantity surveying, and project management. In the first year, the focus is on introducing students to the fundamentals of the built environment, including its key stakeholders and broader political, social, and environmental influences. Modules such as Introduction to the Built Environment and Built Environment Technology 1 lay the groundwork by helping students understand construction processes, sustainable materials, and legal frameworks. Modules like Integrated Digital Design and Residential Quantification and Cost allow for early exposure to practical tools like Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the development of core quantity surveying skills. Innovation and law modules further round out the first-year learning experience by offering insights into future trends and legal responsibilities. The second year builds upon this foundation with a stronger focus on commercial and procurement practices, cost planning, and more complex technological applications. Modules like Procurement, Cost Management, and Commercial Quantification and Cost delve deeper into the professional responsibilities of quantity surveyors and construction managers. Students also begin to apply digital tools and knowledge to real-world scenarios through the Integrated Digital Design for Complex Structures module. These experiences are designed to foster critical thinking, leadership, and collaborative skills essential for interdisciplinary teamwork. In the final year, the emphasis shifts toward applying accumulated knowledge in real-world and research contexts. The Individual Honours Project is a major component where students independently explore a topic of their choice. Alongside this, modules like Contract Practice, Civils Quantification and Cost, and Project Management enhance both technical competence and professional judgment. Bid Strategy and Professional Practice wraps up the course with a strong focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, bid preparation, and industry expectations.
