COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of the Policing degree, students are introduced to foundational knowledge of police practice and the criminal justice system in England and Wales. Modules such as Policing in England and Wales and Models of Policing and Intelligence explore the historical and structural development of the police service, offering insight into operational frameworks and intelligence-led policing. The Criminal Justice System in England and Wales module develops an understanding of crime as a social construct, while Criminal Investigation and Forensics delves into the role of forensic science and its value in investigations. Introduction to Evidence Based Policing introduces students to research-informed practice, promoting the use of empirical evidence in decision-making. The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion module encourages students to critically engage with how police forces address inclusion, minority engagement, and policy implementation. In the second year, the program builds practical and theoretical skills with modules such as Criminal Law and Police Powers and Policing and Ethics, which examine legislation, the application of law, and ethical challenges within professional practice. Investigative Interviewing Skills equips students with practical knowledge of interviewing techniques, while Career Development and Employability supports preparation for police recruitment processes through mock assessments and physical testing. Public Protection and Managing Vulnerability focuses on safeguarding and vulnerability, including issues like domestic abuse and exploitation. Applied Policing Skills blends immersive simulation with group research, promoting critical thinking and communication. Students also receive non-credit research support and a mentor to help prepare for their final-year project. In the third year, students tackle leadership and emerging issues. Organisation and Leadership within Policing evaluates strategic management and human resource practices, while Policing Futures analyses the digitalisation of crime, moral panics, and international policing cooperation. Tackling Terrorism focuses on the causes, definitions, and responses to terrorism. The Independent Research Project enables students to investigate a personal topic of interest, applying research methods in a sustained academic inquiry. Optional modules like Community Policing and Engagement or a Community Safety Placement offer real-world experience and further explore partnerships between police and communities, providing practical insight into modern policing challenges and enhancing employability.
