COURSE CURRICULUM
In Year 1, students are required to complete 120 credits through a range of core modules designed to provide foundational knowledge in gemmology and jewellery studies. The "Earth Processes and Mineral Properties" module introduces students to the geological processes that form minerals and gemstones, focusing on their physical and optical properties. "Introduction to Gemstone & Diamond Practical" allows students to develop hands-on skills using gemmological instruments and gain familiarity with a variety of gem materials. "History and Culture of Jewellery" explores the historical and cultural influences on jewellery, helping students understand the global distinctions and material preferences within the market. The "Synthetic, Simulant and Treated Gemstones" module teaches students to identify synthetic gemstones and their production methods. "Practical Gemmology" builds on previous practical skills, focusing on the identification of coloured gemstones, synthetic materials, and treated stones, as well as diamond grading.Year 2 extends knowledge and skills with 120 credits. The "Applied Gemmology" module deepens gem testing abilities, covering organic and inorganic stones and introducing advanced diamond grading. "Light, Optics and Colour" builds on earlier studies, exploring the advanced concepts of gemstone light phenomena, optics, and colour. "Organics" develops expertise in organic gemstones like pearls, coral, and amber, while addressing ethical concerns and identification techniques. The "Jade" module delves into the cultural and commercial significance of jade, its geological origins, and treatments. "Industry Studies" prepares students for post-graduation careers by reflecting on industry roles and providing experiential learning opportunities.In the final year, students complete 120 credits, including the "Advanced Gemmology and Analytical Techniques" module, which focuses on state-of-the-art gem testing methods. "Valuation Science" enhances understanding of the valuation of gemstones, jewellery, and metals. The "Major Project: Gemmology" allows students to undertake independent research in an area of personal interest, culminating in a written dissertation or practice-based portfolio.
