COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, students will complete foundational modules necessary for game development. The Game Programming module introduces essential programming languages and tools, guiding students through practical assignments to create basic game functionalities. The Modelling module focuses on the creation and manipulation of 3D game assets, teaching techniques in modelling, texturing, and lighting. The Game Asset Pipeline module explores efficient game asset creation and management, while the Game Mechanics module dives into designing and programming game systems. In the Animation module, students will learn the principles of animation, creating smooth and responsive animations. The Game Design module introduces key principles of game design, focusing on level design, narrative development, and user interface design.Year 2 builds on this foundation with more advanced topics. The High Performance Libraries module introduces advanced programming concepts to optimise game performance, while the Web and Mobile Development module teaches skills for developing games on mobile and web platforms. In Game Studio Production, students work in teams to develop a game from concept to completion, gaining real-world experience. The Game Engine Architecture module focuses on the design and development of game engines, while the Computer Graphics module explores techniques like 3D rendering and visual effects. The Collaborative Practice module encourages teamwork across different specialisations, helping students develop communication and project planning skills.In the final year, students will focus on advanced game development techniques. The Game Artificial Intelligence module explores AI techniques such as pathfinding and machine learning for creating intelligent game characters. Network Programming teaches the fundamentals of creating multiplayer games, focusing on client-server architecture and performance. The Game Physics module covers realistic physics, enhancing gameplay immersion through mechanics like gravity and collision. Console Game Development introduces the unique challenges of developing for console platforms, with a focus on technical requirements and performance optimisation. The Individual Honours Project is a capstone module where students undertake an independent project, showcasing their creativity, technical skills, and understanding of professional game development practices.
