COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing curriculum is structured to provide students with a comprehensive blend of academic knowledge, professional development and extensive clinical practice across three stages of study, ensuring they achieve the competencies required for registration as an adult nurse. In the first stage, students establish strong academic and professional foundations through modules focused on developing their nursing identity, enhancing study and communication skills, and building confidence for professional practice. They study applied anatomy and physiology to understand the structure and function of the human body and its relevance to patient assessment and care. The Principles of Adult Nursing module introduces essential nursing knowledge, clinical skills and evidence-based practice required to care for adults across a range of healthcare settings. Students also explore health promotion and strategies for reducing health inequalities, enabling them to support healthier communities while addressing the wider social factors affecting health. Professional Practice 1 provides supervised clinical placement experience where theoretical learning is applied in real healthcare environments. During the second stage, students strengthen their clinical expertise by studying the management of acutely ill adults, caring for people with long-term conditions, nursing leadership and patient advocacy while continuing their academic and professional development. Professional Practice 2 further develops clinical competence through practical experience in diverse healthcare settings. In the final stage, students focus on research and quality improvement to understand how evidence supports improvements in healthcare delivery and patient outcomes. They also study the coordination and delivery of complex adult nursing care, preparing them to manage patients with multiple and advanced healthcare needs while working effectively within multidisciplinary teams. An optional module allows students to develop specialist knowledge aligned with their career interests. Professional Practice 3 provides advanced clinical experience that consolidates theoretical knowledge, practical skills and professional judgement, ensuring graduates are fully prepared to deliver safe, compassionate and evidence-based care. Overall, the curriculum develops highly competent, reflective and adaptable nursing professionals with the clinical expertise, leadership abilities and research skills required for successful careers across hospitals, community services, primary care, specialist healthcare settings and international nursing practice.
