COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Stage Management course is structured to progressively develop students into skilled, confident professionals equipped for the demands of the theatre and live performance industries. In Year 1, students are introduced to the core foundations of stage management through modules like Practical Stage Management 1 (ASM), where they experience working in real production settings, managing time-sensitive tasks and collaborating with creative teams across three production seasons. This is supported by modules such as Production Realisation, where students apply design knowledge in props, costumes, and scenic detail, and create detailed prompt copies to meet high production standards. Technical Theatre 1 and Production Design 1 introduce the fundamentals of lighting, sound, video, and design elements, helping students understand the technical framework that supports live performances. Year 2 builds on these foundations with Practical Stage Management 2 (DSM), which focuses on the duties of a Deputy Stage Manager while preparing students to transition into full Stage Manager roles. Modules like Production Administration equip students with knowledge of budgeting, touring logistics, and arts management, while Technical Theatre 2 and Production Design 2 allow for deeper specialisation in either sound, lighting, props, costume, or scenic design. Collaborative Practice introduces interdisciplinary teamwork, encouraging students to expand their creative horizons and enhance their collaborative skills. In the final year, students take on full Stage Manager responsibilities in Practical Stage Management 3 (SM), dealing with live performances while ensuring adherence to Health and Safety standards. Professional Development prepares students for freelance work and industry networking, emphasizing lifelong learning and career sustainability. The Final Major Project allows for independent creative expression, giving students the chance to lead a project that showcases their cumulative skills in real-world, collaborative settings. Overall, the course balances practical experience with creative and administrative training, producing graduates ready for a wide range of stage and production roles.
