COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Sports Journalism course is designed to equip students with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required to succeed in the fast-paced, evolving world of sports media. In Year 1, students gain foundational understanding through modules such as Understanding Media Texts, Industries and Audiences, and Sports Journalism Landscapes, which examine how sports content is created, consumed, and distributed. Key journalistic techniques are introduced in modules like Introduction to Sports Journalism Techniques and Digital Reporting, where students learn how to craft compelling stories and navigate digital platforms. Community and Industry Collaboration provides real-world experience by engaging with local communities and collaborative projects, enhancing employability and teamwork. Year 2 builds on this base with core modules such as Media Law in Practice and Journalism in Context, which develop students’ understanding of journalistic ethics, regulation, and the shifting landscape of modern media. Sports PR and Communication explores the relationship between media, athletes, and fans, giving insight into how narratives are shaped in sport. Students also choose from faculty modules including Work Placement, Live Project, or Collaborative Practice, alongside a wide range of optional modules such as Photojournalism, Digital Storytelling, and PR Campaign Planning, allowing them to tailor their learning to specific interests or career aspirations. In the final year, core modules like The Sports Industry and Major Project Preparation help students reflect on current issues and begin developing their individual final project. They choose from three Major Project options—Dissertation, Hybrid, or Production—to demonstrate their expertise and creativity in a significant piece of work. Optional final-year modules such as Media Activism, Race, Media and Culture, and Audio Drama and Podcast Writing offer further opportunities to specialise. Overall, the course combines academic study with hands-on experience, preparing graduates for careers across sports journalism, digital media, PR, and content creation.
