COURSE CURRICULUM
This BA Sociology degree offers a critical and comprehensive exploration of society, power, identity, and culture, equipping students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to understand and engage with the contemporary world. In the first year, students are introduced to key sociological theories, classical thinkers, and the historical roots of the discipline, while also examining the legacies of colonialism and gender exclusion. Modules like Sociological Imagination, City, Community, Culture, and Crime, Punishment & Society provide insight into urban life, inequality, and the evolution of criminology, supported by training in ethnographic methods and political sociology. Students also begin their journey as researchers with an introduction to core research methods. The second year deepens theoretical understanding through Contemporary Social Theory and introduces the analysis of pressing social issues such as race, media, and inequality. Students apply sociological knowledge to real-world challenges, including through assessments like public campaign videos and fieldwork, while continuing to develop research skills through Applied Sociological Research. Optional modules offer opportunities to explore space, the environment, or gain work experience. In the final year, students critically engage with globalisation, identity, and migration, linking macro-level forces with personal and collective experience. The Integrated Research Project enables students to design and carry out a substantial independent research study aligned with their interests. A range of optional modules, such as Music and Society, Postcoloniality, Global Cities, or Activism and Social Change, allows students to specialise in areas such as cultural studies, global sociology, or political resistance. The course emphasises inclusion, critical thinking, and social responsibility throughout, preparing graduates for careers in research, policy, media, education, the third sector, or further academic study. It also promotes the ability to think independently, analyse complex social processes, and communicate ideas effectively in a range of contexts.
