COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the course, students are introduced to fundamental design principles and processes that are essential for understanding the design field. Key modules include Design Principles and Processes, which focuses on the basics of design thinking and execution, and Contextual and Cultural Studies, which provides historical insights into design ideologies. Design Visualisation develops essential 2D and 3D skills through drawing and image-building tasks, while Materials and the Made Object explores material properties and processes, encouraging creative design within technical constraints. The Scales of Manufacture module introduces students to design for different production scales, considering sustainability and economies of scale. Moving into the second year, the focus shifts to industry-relevant skills and employability. Modules such as Design Communication build advanced CAD skills, particularly in SolidWorks, while Design Synthesis allows students to apply user-centered design principles in real-world scenarios. The Design Focus module gives students the chance to pursue self-directed practice, building a portfolio in their chosen area of interest. Optional modules like Work Placement and Live Project provide professional experience through external briefs and collaborations, enhancing industry knowledge. In the final year, students undertake projects that encourage personal development and individual direction. The Design in Context module helps students develop innovative concepts in response to client briefs, while the Major Project involves in-depth research into a personal area of interest, culminating in a written dissertation or practice-based portfolio. The Major Design Project allows students to implement their research into a self-directed design project, showcasing their acquired skills and knowledge. The course is designed to prepare students for professional careers in design, equipping them with both creative and technical expertise.
