COURSE CURRICULUM
The Journalism course is structured across three years, progressively developing students' knowledge, skills, and professional experience. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of journalism and media through six core modules totaling 120 credits. These cover media theory, industry structures, and audience engagement, alongside the core skills of storytelling, digital reporting, and journalism techniques. Students also undertake a collaborative project with a community focus, promoting teamwork and practical application of skills in real-world contexts. In the second year, students build on this foundation with a deeper exploration of journalism’s role in society, media law, ethics, and newsroom practices. Three core modules provide 60 credits, focusing on the evolving media landscape, legal and ethical considerations, and simulated newsroom reporting. Additionally, students complete one core Faculty module, choosing between work placement, live project, or collaborative practice, which supports professional development. To tailor their learning, students also choose at least two optional modules from a wide selection, including photojournalism, podcast production, digital storytelling, television studio work, public relations, graphic design, and more. These modules allow students to develop specialist interests and versatile skills. In the final year, the focus shifts to advanced journalistic practices and the completion of a substantial independent project. Students take two core modules on advanced reporting techniques and project planning. They then select one major project pathway—dissertation, hybrid, or production—depending on their interests. To further personalise their learning, students choose additional optional modules in areas such as media activism, social media, audience engagement, cultural studies, creative production, and feature writing. This final year allows students to apply their learning, refine their voice, and prepare for a professional career in journalism or related media fields through a combination of critical reflection, technical expertise, and creative output.
