COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1 of the Graphic Design course, students are introduced to the core principles and skills necessary for visual communication. Through modules such as "Fundamental Practice: Graphics," students learn about the fundamentals of graphic design, including composition, type, imagery, and colour. This module equips them with both hands-on and digital skills to create effective design solutions. "Professional Futures: Communication" explores the role of communication in design, helping students understand how to convey ideas clearly and effectively. "Design at Play" immerses students in branding, allowing them to explore the creation of visual identities, packaging, and digital platforms. The "Design for Change" module emphasizes the power of design in addressing social and environmental issues, encouraging students to use design for positive impact.In Year 2, students build on their foundational knowledge and begin to specialize in areas of graphic design that interest them. "Emerging Technologies" introduces students to cutting-edge trends like augmented reality, virtual reality, and generative coding, preparing them for future design innovations. "Professional Futures: Collaboration" focuses on the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork, teaching students how to work with others and communicate effectively in a professional setting. "Defining Practice: Graphics" helps students define their personal design direction and prepares them for the final year by encouraging reflection and the development of an industry-standard portfolio. Optional modules such as "Work Placement," "Independent Creative Entrepreneur," and "Industry Project" offer real-world experience, further developing students' skills and employability.The final year is dedicated to refining and showcasing students' individual design identities. In "Advancing Practice," students deepen their focus and work more autonomously, while "Independent Enquiry" allows them to contextualize their work through research and analysis. The "Major Project" enables students to undertake in-depth research or practice-based work in an area of personal interest, culminating in a written dissertation or portfolio. The course concludes with "Professional Futures: Presentation," where students refine their presentation skills and prepare for their future careers in the design industry.
