COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of the course, the focus is on developing the foundational skills and knowledge required to build a personal creative practice. Students explore contemporary art practice through a combination of theoretical learning and hands-on studio work. The core modules include Making Studio, where students experiment with different materials, methods, and concepts to expand their understanding of art production, and Making a Living 1: Developing Skills, which introduces career-building skills such as portfolio creation and website development. Making Meaning enables students to design their own project briefs, integrating research, material experimentation, and critical reflection. In Making Public, students learn about the relationship between art and its audience, culminating in public-facing exhibitions or events. These modules provide opportunities for students to reflect on their work and develop an understanding of the broader contexts of contemporary art.In the second year, the emphasis shifts towards more independent practice, where students refine their creative ideas and engage in external partnerships. Making Practice introduces practice-based research, encouraging students to frame their work with key concepts and materials. Making a Living 2: With Communities explores how artists sustain their practice through community engagement, while Making Critical deepens the relationship between theory and practice. Students also have the option to choose between Work Placement or Live Project modules, both of which provide valuable real-world experience in the creative industries. The final year is focused on consolidating and showcasing individual artistic practices. The Making Research module enables students to undertake in-depth research projects that inform their final works, while Making a Living 3: Professional Practice helps students prepare for life after graduation with a focus on career development. Making Exhibitions involves the realization of a public-facing exhibition, allowing students to demonstrate their skills and ideas in a professional setting. This year prepares students for professional art practice and sets the stage for their future careers in the arts.
