COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1, students complete five core modules totaling 100 credits. These include Voices of Birmingham (20 credits), where students explore the city's multicultural identity, and Adaptation (20 credits), which focuses on text transformations and linguistic analysis. Prose Writing (20 credits) develops students' writing and analytical skills, while Key Critical Concepts (20 credits) introduces foundational literary theories. Craft of Writing (20 credits) helps students enhance their creative writing skills. Additionally, students must complete at least 20 credits from optional modules like Literature and Conflict (20 credits) and Language in Action (20 credits). In Year 2, students take core modules totaling 60 credits, including Writing and the Environment (20 credits), Writing Short Stories (20 credits), and Screenwriting (20 credits). Students also complete 20 credits from optional faculty modules such as Work Placement (20 credits) and Collaborative Practice (20 credits), with a choice of at least 40 credits from other optional modules like The Romantics (20 credits) and Multicultural Literature (20 credits). In the Final Year, students complete three core modules totaling 80 credits: Writing Poetry (20 credits), Major Project Preparation (20 credits), and Major Project: English Dissertation (40 credits). Alongside these, students must select at least 40 credits from optional modules, including Modernism and its Legacies (20 credits), Applied Sociolinguistics (20 credits), The Gothic (20 credits), and Shakespeare Studies (20 credits). Other options include Teaching English as a Foreign Language (20 credits), Writing Creative Nonfiction (20 credits), Moral Philosophy (20 credits), Stage and Society (20 credits), Understanding Social Media (20 credits), and Audio Drama and Podcast Writing (20 credits). These modules offer a diverse range of opportunities to specialize in areas such as creative writing, linguistics, philosophy, media, and theatre.
