In the first year of the Criminology program, students are introduced to foundational criminological concepts and the broader social, political, and media contexts of crime. *Key Debates in Criminological Theory* (20 credits) explores the origins of criminology, focusing on key theories, debates, and the interdisciplinary nature of the subject, addressing core questions about crime, its causes, and prevention. *Crime and the Media* (20 credits) examines the relationship between media and crime, analyzing how crime is portrayed in both fictional and non-fictional media, with a particular focus on gendered and racialized portrayals. *Crime, Punishment and Society* (20 credits) delves into historical developments in criminology, helping students understand how shifts in social, political, and economic contexts impact crime and punishment, with a focus on social movements and changing social attitudes. *The Criminal Justice System* (20 credits) provides an overview of the system, exploring the roles and responsibilities of different actors, the influence of socio-economic factors, and contemporary issues in justice delivery. *Policing and Investigation* (20 credits) investigates the origins and evolution of policing, exploring theories and practices, contemporary issues, and the role of media and technology in modern policing. *Security, Conflict and Justice* (20 credits) introduces students to Security Studies, covering various theoretical approaches to security, and contemporary issues such as terrorism, global security, environmental security, and cybersecurity.In the second year of the Criminology program, students deepen their understanding of criminological theories and contemporary issues. Modules such as *Understanding Crime and Criminal Behaviour* (20 credits) examine desistance and re-entry within the context of criminal behavior, while *Experiencing Harm* (20 credits) shifts the focus to victims and the impact of labeling. *Prisons and Punishment* (20 credits) critically explores the history and current reliance on imprisonment, and *Research Proposal* (20 credits) equips students with the necessary skills to conduct criminological research and write an undergraduate dissertation. Optional modules like *Crime in the City* (20 credits) explore the relationship between crime and urban settings, *Youth Crime and Justice* (20 credits) investigate juvenile offending, and *Issues in Criminal Investigation* (20 credits) introduce forensic science methods. *Race and Crime* (20 credits) critiques the lack of minority perspectives in criminology, *Making Sense of Homicide* (20 credits) engages with homicide theory and case studies, and *Substance Use, Crime and Deviance* (20 credits) looks at the connection between drug use and crime.
