COURSE CURRICULUM

This criminology and criminal justice course is structured to provide a detailed understanding of crime, law enforcement, security, and justice, progressing over three years. The first year focuses on foundational concepts, such as criminological theories, the relationship between crime and media, and the historical development of punishment. Key modules include Key Debates in Criminological Theory, which introduces students to core criminological perspectives and debates, and Crime and the Media, where the role of media in shaping public perceptions of crime is explored. Additionally, students will study The Criminal Justice System, focusing on its structure and the roles of its various components, as well as Policing and Investigation, which covers the origins and contemporary issues in policing. A module on Security, Conflict, and Justice introduces students to global security issues, such as terrorism and cybersecurity.In the second year, students deepen their understanding with modules like Contemporary Policing, which addresses modern police practices, and Issues in Criminal Investigation, focusing on forensic science's role in solving crimes. Policing Priorities prepares students for police recruitment processes, enhancing their employability. The Research Proposal module equips students with the skills necessary to design and conduct criminological research. Optional modules like Crime in the City and Youth Crime and Justice offer opportunities to explore specific areas of criminology.In the final year, students complete core modules such as The Ethics of Investigation, focusing on police ethics, and Lie to Me: Essential Criminal Justice Interviewing Techniques, which develops practical interviewing skills. The Extended Project allows students to carry out independent research on a topic of their choice. Optional modules in the final year cover diverse topics, including Cybercrime, Hate Crime, and Harms of the Powerful, enabling students to tailor their learning to their interests. Through this comprehensive course, students are well-prepared for careers in criminology, law enforcement, policy, and research.
