COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Applied Theatre course is a three-year program designed to develop students as skilled and purposeful theatre-makers, capable of creating work that engages communities and audiences. In the first year, students explore the foundations of applied theatre through modules on Applied Theatre, Drama for Learning, Community Stories, and Performance. They gain practical experience working with professional practitioners, local companies, and communities, developing performance, facilitation, and collaboration skills. Year two builds on these foundations, emphasizing professional practice, extended drama facilitation, political theatre, and performance projects tailored to specific audiences. Students undertake full-time placements in applied theatre or arts organizations, applying their skills in real-world contexts while devising and performing original work. In the third year, students consolidate their learning through a Personal Project, advanced Drama for Learning, a Community Project, and an Applied Theatre Festival. They create and manage independent or group projects, including site-specific performances, while researching community needs and applying advanced facilitation and creative techniques. The festival provides a professional showcase of student work for industry practitioners. Across the course, students develop practical theatre-making skills, critical understanding, and professional experience, emerging as confident, adaptable, and socially aware practitioners ready to contribute to applied theatre, community engagement, and educational performance contexts.
