COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Sound (Design) course is structured over three trimesters, combining creative practice, technical development, and research to prepare students for professional careers in sound design. In the first trimester, students focus on developing their skills and exploring the contexts of their work through three modules: Sound Skills, Research and Practice, and Creative Portfolio. Sound Skills expands core technical abilities with projects across sound design, sound production, and composition pathways. Research and Practice encourages critical reflection, situating students’ work within contemporary artistic and cultural contexts while preparing them for potential PhD-level study. The Creative Portfolio module allows students to apply sound design techniques in narrative storytelling and immersive audio, creating work for games, film, animation, documentaries, and sound installations. In the second trimester, the Advanced Audio Workflows module introduces industry-standard practices in audio post-production, game audio implementation, theatre sound, and audiovisual installations, assessed through a practical project. Students continue developing skills in Sound Skills and complete Research and Practice with a contextual project. The final trimester is dedicated to the Major Project, an independent, large-scale practical research project supported by a reflective journal. This project enables students to explore an original area of sound design practice and produce a substantial portfolio that demonstrates technical expertise, creative innovation, and professional readiness.
