COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Sound (Composition and Sonic Art) course is structured across three trimesters, combining creative development, technical training, and academic research. In the first trimester, students focus on creating new work while beginning two year-long modules: Sound Skills and Research and Practice. Sound Skills enables students to expand their technical abilities through a range of project options including composition, sound art, sound design, and multimedia. The Research and Practice module encourages critical reflection on creative processes, situating personal work within contemporary artistic and cultural contexts and preparing students for potential PhD-level research. Alongside these, the Creative Portfolio module supports the creation of original compositions or sound art pieces, developed through seminars and peer discussions that explore key issues and contemporary practices. In the second trimester, students refine their practice in preparation for public presentation at the university’s SparkFest, continuing to enhance their technical and research skills. The trimester also concludes the Research and Practice module with a contextual project. The final trimester focuses on the Major Project, a large-scale independent creative work that showcases the skills, innovation, and artistic identity developed throughout the course. Core modules include Sound Skills, Practice and Research, Creative Portfolio, Presenting Practice, and Major Project.
