COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Professional Practice at Bath Spa University offers flexible pathways depending on whether students study full-time or part-time and whether they choose to pursue the full MA or the Postgraduate Certificate. Students’ progression may also be influenced by Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) credits, which can be applied to reduce the number of modules required. The course emphasizes independent learning and professional development, with a focus on integrating practical experience into academic study. Typically, students begin with a Research Methods module to build the skills needed for evidence-based inquiry, before moving on to the dissertation, which serves as the final module for the MA. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to draw on their own professional practice, completing action-based research, critical reviews, or academic writing that reflects their work context. Module choices are discussed with the course leader, who advises on the best fit for individual professional goals and areas of interest. Core modules cover topics such as Independent Study, Work-Based Action Enquiry, SEN and Inclusion, Education and Society, Perspectives of Play and Creativity, Research and the Professional, and Contemporary Issues in Inclusive Education. By combining theoretical understanding, research skills, and applied professional practice, the course equips graduates with the ability to critically evaluate, develop, and communicate their professional expertise effectively across a range of educational and professional settings.
