COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Heritage Management course is structured across three trimesters, guiding students from foundational knowledge to advanced professional practice. In the first trimester, students explore evolving and contested concepts of heritage, examining its social, political, and economic contexts. Workshops led by leading industry professionals introduce best practices and provide ongoing mentorship. The second trimester focuses on applying learning through independent research, allowing students to investigate a key issue or area of interest within current heritage practice. Alongside this, a 25-day placement with one of the university’s professional partners offers valuable hands-on experience in the field. The final trimester enables students to consolidate their knowledge by completing an extended dissertation or creating and delivering a practical project in collaboration with heritage sites, museums, archives, or community organisations. Part-time students follow the same pathway over two years, progressing from theory to practice at a flexible pace. Core modules include Contextualising Heritage, Heritage Management: Planning and Practice, Placement, Heritage Project, and options such as Global Heritage, Cultural Landscapes, and The Country House in Context. The course emphasises real-world learning and continues to evolve based on feedback, ensuring graduates are equipped with relevant skills for the heritage sector.
