COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Fine Art (Media) program at Bath Spa University is a one-year, three-trimester course designed to develop advanced creative, technical, and professional skills in media art practice. In the first trimester, students are encouraged to take creative risks and challenge their existing knowledge while experimenting freely in specialist facilities, open studio spaces, and technical workshops, with expert support on hand. This stage emphasizes playfulness and exploration, allowing students to interrogate their creative processes and develop foundational media skills across moving image, sound, and digital production. In the second trimester, students maintain an experimental approach while beginning to focus their practice more narrowly. Academic guidance supports the evaluation of initial studio developments, refinement of working strategies, and careful consideration of how completed works relate to one another and to exhibition spaces, ensuring professional presentation and coherence. The final trimester is dedicated to the self-directed Master’s Project, where students work independently to produce a cohesive body of work that demonstrates advanced technical, conceptual, and professional expertise. This culminates in the Degree Show, showcasing students’ creative achievements to the public. Throughout the program, students develop a strong individual artistic identity, critical and reflective practice, and the professional skills necessary to succeed in media art, creative industries, or further postgraduate research.
