COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Education in Leadership and Management at Bath Spa University is a one-year full-time or two-year part-time program designed to develop expertise in educational leadership through a combination of theory, research, and practice-based inquiry. In the first trimester, students gain a broad understanding of the context in which educational leaders operate, exploring the role of education in contemporary society, the implementation of educational reforms, and the ethical frameworks that guide leadership practice. This trimester also examines how leaders engage and inspire others to bring about change within educational settings. In the second trimester, the focus shifts to research skills and methodologies, supporting students in developing and writing a proposal for their own research project. Alongside research, students enhance their leadership capabilities through coaching and mentoring, learning how these skills contribute to effective leadership practice. In the final trimester, students undertake a dissertation on a chosen aspect of educational leadership, working closely with a tutor and benefiting from one-to-one tutorials and optional research seminars. The program includes modules such as Education and Society, Leadership in Practice, Leading, Mentoring and Coaching, Research Methods in Social Sciences, and the Dissertation. By combining theoretical understanding with applied research and reflective practice, the MA prepares graduates for senior leadership roles in schools, colleges, and other educational institutions, equipping them to drive change, improve outcomes, and foster positive organisational culture.
