COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Education in Early Childhood Studies at Bath Spa University is structured over three trimesters to provide a comprehensive and progressive learning experience. In the first trimester, students engage with foundational modules that encourage critical analysis of political, ethical, cultural, and social issues in early childhood and education more broadly. The focus is on applying theoretical insights to understand the impact of national and international trends, with particular attention to children’s right to play and learning through play. The second trimester builds on this foundation, exploring the connections between play, creativity, and learning while introducing research methodology. Students begin to identify and refine the focus of their dissertation, considering how research can inform practice and policy in early childhood education. In the final trimester, students undertake an in-depth research project culminating in a 16,000-word dissertation, guided by a supervisor and supported through optional research seminars and workshops. This project allows learners to critically investigate a chosen topic related to early childhood theory, policy, or practice, synthesising knowledge and demonstrating advanced analytical skills. Throughout the program, modules such as Education and Society, Research Methods in the Social Sciences, Early Childhood: Education, Culture and Society, and Perspectives on Play and Creativity integrate theory with practical insights, preparing graduates to make a meaningful impact in early childhood education, policy, and research.
