COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Children’s Publishing at Bath Spa University is structured across three trimesters, providing a comprehensive understanding of the industry alongside practical skill development. In the first trimester, students are introduced to the global children’s and young adult publishing landscape, exploring the role of sales, marketing, and consumer insight in shaping publication decisions. They learn to develop marketing campaigns, merchandising strategies, and brand management approaches, while also gaining knowledge of new product development, commissioning, and current industry trends. Visiting industry experts offer insights into areas such as rights management, digital marketing, and commissioning strategy. In the second trimester, students develop specialist skills in desk editing, production, design, and layout, learning to work with illustrators and understand the relationship between text and image across formats including picture books. They gain knowledge of print management, sustainable production processes, and digital content creation, such as audiobooks, podcasts, and story apps, guided by experienced industry practitioners. In the final trimester, students complete an industry project or dissertation, turning ideas into a finished proposal and developing a professional digital portfolio. They receive careers coaching, with opportunities for internships and work experience, equipping them with practical expertise, creative and technical skills, and a strong professional portfolio to launch their careers in children’s publishing.
