COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Sociology degree offers a detailed study of society, social structures, and the factors that shape human behaviour and interaction. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational sociological concepts, exploring questions about society, power and resistance, crime, deviance, social control, and urban environments, while developing core research skills. The second year expands this knowledge with advanced study in sociological debates, research methods, and applied topics such as migration, ageing, climate change, education, health, and social justice. Students also gain practical experience through work placements and professional development opportunities. The final year focuses on independent research with a dissertation and specialised modules examining contemporary issues, including punishment and penology, gender, culture, environmental justice, community engagement, ethnicity, media, and global political contexts, alongside a field course addressing climate change, water resources, and sustainable communities. Throughout the program, students develop analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, learning to interpret social data, evaluate evidence, and understand the complexities of social inequality, conflict, and change. The course equips graduates to apply sociological knowledge to real-world problems, preparing them for careers in social research, policy, community development, education, or related fields, as well as providing a strong foundation for postgraduate study and professional engagement in addressing contemporary societal challenges.
