COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Forensic Science degree offers a comprehensive program designed to equip students with the practical skills, scientific knowledge, and investigative expertise required in modern forensic practice. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge in forensic techniques, biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, and digital forensics, alongside an introduction to crime, disorder, and criminal law. This provides a balanced understanding of both the scientific and societal contexts of criminal investigations. In the second year, the course advances into applied and analytical skills, including advanced forensic science techniques, crime scene investigation, forensic casework, and the psychology of criminal investigations. Students also study policing, criminal justice theory, and pharmacology, combining practical investigative skills with a thorough understanding of legal and societal frameworks. The program integrates a professional placement year, offering real-world experience in forensic or related settings. In the final year, students undertake research and dissertation projects while exploring contemporary topics in forensic science, mechanisms of disease, clinical biochemistry, advanced criminal and forensic psychology, and cybersecurity. Optional placements provide further industry experience, and students examine the role of cybercrime and the legal and ethical considerations surrounding digital investigations. Graduates leave with the technical competence, analytical capability, and professional insight to pursue careers in forensic laboratories, law enforcement, criminal investigation units, and allied sectors, or to continue into postgraduate study.
