COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Textile Design course is structured to develop students’ creative, technical, and professional skills over three years, preparing them for careers in textile and fashion industries. In the first year, modules such as Drawing and Colour for Design, Repeat Pattern with Digital Skills, and Core Textile Skills introduce students to essential practical techniques, while How to Think Like a Designer: Design, Culture and Context and History and Context: Introduction to Material and Visual Culture provide critical and historical frameworks for understanding textiles within cultural and creative contexts. The second year focuses on developing professional and industry-relevant skills through modules like Textile Industry Partnership, Professional Practice for Textile Design, and Textile Focus. Advanced Textile Skills: Exploration and Experimentation and Textile Futures: Material and Process encourage innovation and experimentation, while Design: Contemporary Issues and Practice and the Professional Placement Year provide real-world experience and engagement with contemporary industry practices. In the final year, students consolidate their learning through Business and Professional Development with Portfolio Presentation, refining their design practice and professional portfolio. Modules such as Refining and Resolving Your Practice and Visual and Material Culture: Final Study allow students to produce a cohesive body of work that reflects personal creativity, technical expertise, and critical understanding. Overall, the course combines practical skill development, critical thinking, and professional preparation to equip graduates for successful careers in textile design, fashion, and related creative industries.
