COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Photography course is designed to develop students’ creative, technical, and professional abilities across a wide range of photographic practices. In the first year, modules such as Photographic Practice 1: The Photographic Image, Photographic Practice 2: Identity and the Camera, and Photographic Practice 3: Image and Context introduce students to core skills in image-making, conceptual thinking, and visual communication. Photographic Practice 4: Perception of Place and How Did We Get Here?: Contexts of Photography provide insight into the cultural, historical, and theoretical frameworks of photography, while Professional Contexts 1 supports early professional development. In the second year, students expand their practice through modules including Photographic Practice 5: Narrative – Fact, Photographic Practice 6: Narrative – Fiction, and Photographic Practice 7: Object, Figure, Space, exploring storytelling, conceptual approaches, and spatial awareness. Professional Contexts 2 and We Are Here: Photography in the 21st Century enhance industry knowledge, while the Professional Placement Year offers practical experience in a real-world setting. In the final year, students focus on independent creative development with Individual Practice: Portfolio 1 and 2, the Individual Practice: Major Project, and Situating Practice: Final Project, culminating in a professional portfolio. Professional Contexts 3 ensures readiness for careers in photography, equipping graduates with the skills, confidence, and critical understanding necessary for success in the industry.
