COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) History degree at Bath Spa University combines academic study with practical, applied experience to develop both historical knowledge and professional skills. In the first year, students explore European and global histories, ideas, and narratives, developing foundational analytical and research skills while examining themes such as revolution, nationalism, modernity, belonging, and protest. The second year emphasizes applied historical practice through modules on archives, evidence, and presenting the past, alongside studies of early modern Britain, diaspora, migration, and intangible histories. Students gain hands-on experience through collaborative projects, digital humanities, and professional placements that prepare them for real-world applications of their knowledge. In the final year, students undertake a major history project and explore specialized topics including conflict and heritage politics, global youth, environmental history, propaganda, censorship, and the Cold War, allowing them to tailor their studies to individual interests. Across all three years, students develop transferable skills such as critical thinking, research, communication, project management, and collaborative working. The course encourages engagement with historical concepts, contemporary relevance, and societal impact, equipping graduates with the expertise to pursue careers in heritage, education, research, archives, museums, public history, and cultural management, or to continue into postgraduate study.
