COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Graphic Design course is structured to develop students’ creative, technical, and professional skills over three years, preparing them for careers in design, illustration, typography, and visual communication. In the first year, modules such as Design Principles: Type and Image and Designing with Time: Type and Image introduce foundational skills in visual design, composition, and time-based media, while Professional Development 1 and Wicked Problems: The Complexity of Critical Design Thinking encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and self-awareness as a designer. In the second year, students build on these skills through modules like Interactivity with Type and Image, and the Graphic Communication series focusing on social good, culture, and commerce, enabling them to explore design across multiple contexts. Professional Development 2 and Critical Design Thinking and Contemporary Issues support professional readiness and contextual understanding, while the Professional Placement Year provides valuable real-world experience within the design industry. In the final year, students undertake Independent Practice 1 and 2 alongside the Design Futures: Independent Critical Project, which allows them to develop a cohesive body of work reflecting personal vision, professional capability, and conceptual depth. Throughout the course, students gain experience in creative problem-solving, experimentation, and professional practice, graduating as innovative, adaptable, and strategically minded designers ready to contribute to the evolving field of graphic design.
