COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Education course at Bath Spa University equips students with a broad understanding of education, combining theory, research, and professional practice. In the first year, students explore foundational concepts including formal and informal education, wellbeing in learning, children and young people’s voice and participation, controversial issues in special and inclusive education, and introductory education research. The second year deepens knowledge through modules on evaluating change in professional practice, workplace-based education research, education policy from local to global perspectives, digital technologies and social justice, supporting learners with additional needs, sociology of education, environment and education, youth participation, TESOL, social inequalities, peace and conflict, and the structural aspects of schooling. Practical experience is reinforced through a professional placement year. In the final year, students engage in advanced research challenges, focusing on knowledge mobilisation in complex contexts, educational professionalism, sustainable development, critical pedagogies, and health and wellbeing in education. Optional modules allow exploration of creativity, culture, arts education, and social inclusion. Throughout the course, students develop analytical, reflective, and practical skills, gaining the ability to evaluate, innovate, and lead in educational settings. Graduates emerge prepared to contribute to diverse educational contexts, addressing social inequalities, promoting inclusion, and supporting transformative learning for individuals and communities.
