COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies course provides a structured and comprehensive pathway for understanding the development, learning, and well-being of young children. In the first year, students explore foundational topics such as children’s voices, constructions of early childhood, diversity and inclusion, research methods, and introductory professional practice. This establishes a strong theoretical and practical base for future learning. In the second year, the focus shifts to care, development, and learning in early childhood, alongside professional practice in real-world settings. Students engage with key issues in early childhood and explore the role of the early childhood pedagogue, while having the option to tailor their studies through modules such as literacy, supporting learners with additional needs, environment and education, or youth participation. In the final year, students deepen their expertise through advanced topics such as leadership and teamwork in early childhood settings, play and playful learning, and an in-depth dissertation project. Additional optional modules allow students to pursue specialized interests in areas like mathematics, science, health and wellbeing, literature, identity, creativity, and art education. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on combining theory with practice, fostering professional skills, critical thinking, and reflective practice, preparing graduates to make a meaningful impact in early childhood settings and related professional contexts.
