COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Creative Writing course provides a comprehensive framework for developing skills across a wide range of writing forms and practices. In the first year, students focus on foundational techniques through modules such as The Writer’s Workshop, Explorations in Prose Fiction, Introduction to Poetry, Introduction to Scriptwriting, and Publishing and Editing for Writers, building a solid base in both creative and professional skills. In the second year, students expand their practice and explore specific genres, including life writing, genre fiction, writing for theatre, graphic novels and comics, short fiction, scripting for screen, performance poetry, and writing for young people. The year also includes modules on creative enterprise, encouraging students to develop professional awareness and practical skills relevant to the writing industry. The final year emphasizes independent and advanced practice through projects in extended prose fiction, poetry collections, advanced scripts, nonfiction, and planning novels for young people, alongside modules in teaching writing, live literature, and the publishing industry. Students are encouraged to critically reflect on contemporary issues in writing through modules like Writing Now, exploring the impact of prizes, popularity, and politics. Throughout the course, students gain collaborative, professional, and practical experience, culminating in a diverse and polished portfolio, preparing them for careers as writers, editors, publishers, or other roles in the creative industries.
