COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mental Health Nursing MSc is structured over two years, combining theoretical learning with practical clinical experience to prepare students for professional practice and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. In the first year, students focus on developing essential engagement and assessment skills in mental health, learning to interact effectively with patients while understanding their needs and circumstances. Core topics include legal and ethical concepts in mental health, planning and delivering humanised care, and physiology and pathophysiology, which provide a foundation for understanding the biological, psychological, and social aspects of mental health. Nursing Practice 1 offers practical experience, allowing students to apply their knowledge in clinical settings under supervision. In the second year, students advance their skills in managing risk and complexity in mental health, learning to navigate challenging scenarios and provide safe, effective care. The program emphasizes leadership and innovation through modules such as Lead, Innovate and Implement, preparing students to influence practice and contribute to service development. The Evidence for Practice Dissertation Module develops research skills, enabling students to critically appraise evidence and apply it to clinical practice. Nursing Practice in the second year consolidates practical experience, ensuring students graduate as competent, compassionate mental health nurses capable of delivering high-quality care across diverse settings.
