COURSE CURRICULUM
The MSc in Counselling at Bangor University offers a comprehensive and structured two-year program designed to develop students into skilled and reflective practitioners. In Year 1, the course provides foundational training across two semesters. Semester 1 includes modules such as Approaches and Therapies 1, Counselling Skills, Research Skills, and Therapeutic Process and Context, focusing on core counselling theories, practical communication skills, and research understanding. Semester 2 builds on this foundation with Approaches and Therapies 2, Advanced Counselling Skills, Research Methods and Statistics, and a dedicated module on Mental Health and Wellbeing, which prepares students to support clients across various emotional and psychological challenges. In Year 2, students select between two core routes: those pursuing the placement-based route to qualify as counsellors must complete the Research and Counselling Practice module, while others following the academic pathway complete the Research and Professional Practice module. Both routes require the completion of 60 credits. In addition, students choose 40 credits from a wide selection of optional modules. These include specialised areas such as Introduction to Counselling Children and Young People, Professional Skills in Psychology, Clinical Neuropsychology, Childhood and Youth, Modern Families, Advanced Research Methods, and Global Early Childhood. This flexibility allows students to tailor the course to match their professional interests and goals. The course combines academic study with professional development through practical training and applied research. It places emphasis on developing evidence-based practice, cultural awareness, ethical competence, and the interpersonal qualities essential to effective counselling. Through engaging with a wide range of psychological and therapeutic topics, students gain insight into various client groups, therapeutic techniques, and mental health contexts. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in counselling, mental health services, education, or to continue toward professional accreditation. The program is suitable for individuals committed to working therapeutically to support psychological wellbeing and personal growth.
