COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Marine Renewable Energy program is a 180-credit course designed to provide advanced scientific, technical, and research training for careers in the marine and offshore renewable energy sector. Core taught modules in Semester 1 include Practical Oceanography, which develops hands-on skills in observing and analysing marine environments, and Key Concepts and Techniques, which introduces essential analytical and methodological tools relevant to marine science and energy systems. In Semester 2, students study Marine Renewable Energy, focusing on the principles, technologies, and environmental considerations of offshore renewable systems, alongside a Literature Review and Project Plan module that prepares students for independent research. Students also complete a major Research Project or Dissertation worth 60 credits in Semester 3, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge and research skills to a substantial investigation in marine renewable energy. In addition to core modules, students must choose optional pathways to tailor their studies. Optional Modules A include Offshore Wind or Geophysical Surveying, enabling specialization in wind energy technologies or marine survey methods. Optional Modules B allow students to select either Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, which explores ocean and atmospheric processes, or Climate and Climate Change, which examines climate systems and their implications for marine energy development. Overall, the program integrates oceanography, renewable energy technology, environmental science, and research practice to prepare graduates for professional and research roles in the growing marine renewable energy industry.
