COURSE CURRICULUM

Students on the MSc in Language Acquisition and Development must complete a minimum of 180 credits in Year 1. All students take a core research methods module, either Linguistics Research Methods or, for those with a prior degree in Linguistics or a closely related subject, Advanced Linguistics Research Methods, subject to discussion with their personal tutor. They also take Language Disorders and Bilingualism, which explores language development in typical and atypical populations. A major component of the degree is the 60-credit dissertation, completed in English or Welsh, where students conduct an independent research project under supervision. In addition to the core and dissertation, students must choose between 60 and 80 credits from Optional A modules that focus specifically on language acquisition and development, such as L2 Speech Learning, Second Language Acquisition and Language Teaching, Psychology of Language, EFL Theory, and Methods in Cognitive and Brain Research. Students may also select up to 20 credits from Optional B modules covering broader areas of linguistics, including Welsh Linguistics, Phonology and Bilingualism, Language Technologies, and Corpus Linguistics, or other approved modules. Non-native English speakers may take up to 20 credits of English language support modules, with tutor approval, in place of optional choices.
