COURSE CURRICULUM

The core modules of the MSc in Dementia Studies provide students with a comprehensive understanding of dementia care from multiple perspectives, equipping them with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Positioning Dementia Care examines the various discourses surrounding dementia and their impact on care delivery, promoting critical awareness of how societal and professional narratives shape practice. Managing Complex Transitions focuses on supporting people with dementia and their family carers through periods of crisis, change, or complexity, fostering skills for responsive and effective intervention. Communication in Dementia Care critically explores the role of communication in understanding the lived experiences of people with dementia and in conducting assessments, highlighting the importance of engagement and empathy. Culturally Sensitive Care addresses the influence of cultural context on the experience of dementia, emphasizing person-centred approaches that respect compassion and dignity. Leadership in Context develops the knowledge and skills necessary for leading change and facilitating innovation within health and social care, considering organisational dynamics, inter-professional teams, and evidence-based strategies. The Research Methods or e-Research Methods module introduces students to quantitative and qualitative research techniques, providing a foundation for conducting robust, ethically-informed research. Collectively, these modules ensure graduates are well-prepared to implement advanced, person-centred, and culturally aware dementia care in diverse settings, while engaging critically with research and practice.
