COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Broadband and Optical Communication is a 180-credit postgraduate program designed to provide advanced knowledge and practical skills in modern communication technologies. The course focuses on high-speed data transmission, wireless systems, and optical networks that underpin today’s global digital infrastructure. In semester one, students study Broadband Communication Systems, which examines architectures and technologies for high-capacity networks, alongside Mobile Communication Systems, covering cellular networks, wireless standards, and mobility management. Advanced Optical Communication introduces fibre-optic systems, optical components, and techniques for high-bandwidth, long-distance transmission. Semester two deepens technical expertise with RF and Optical MEMS, exploring micro-electromechanical systems used in radio frequency and optical applications, and Advanced Control Systems, which develops skills in modelling, analysis, and control of complex engineering systems. Advanced Research Methods equips students with the ability to design, evaluate, and conduct independent technical research, preparing them for project work and professional practice. The program culminates in a 60-credit MSc Individual Project completed in semester three, where students apply theoretical and practical knowledge to a substantial research or industry-focused problem. Overall, the course provides a strong blend of theory, applied engineering, and research skills, preparing graduates for careers in telecommunications, optical networking, wireless technology, and advanced communication system design.
