COURSE CURRICULUM

The Applied Innovation Design program is a 180-credit postgraduate course designed to equip students with the practical and strategic skills necessary for leading innovation across a variety of sectors. The curriculum combines core modules, optional specialisations, and a choice of dissertation pathways to provide a comprehensive learning experience. At its foundation, the course includes essential modules such as Design Project, Design Thinking Processes and Facilitation, Research Methods for Design, and Design Strategy, each worth 20 credits. These modules build a solid grounding in design thinking, innovation methodology, and strategic implementation.Students must complete one of the 60-credit dissertation options, choosing between a traditional dissertation, a strategic planning focus, or an artefact and report-based project. These options allow learners to tailor their final project to align with their career interests or industry goals, whether in design leadership, applied research, or creative product development. The flexibility of the dissertation pathway encourages both academic rigour and practical application.To enhance technical and creative competencies, students select 40 credits from a variety of optional modules. These include areas such as Parametric CAD, Sub-divisional CAD, CAM Digital Manufacturing, Physical and Digital Prototyping, Applied Digital Graphics, Design Factors, and CAD Finite Element Analysis. These modules enable learners to deepen their expertise in specific digital and manufacturing tools or explore user-centred design considerations.Overall, the program provides a balanced blend of theoretical knowledge, creative exploration, and practical application. It is ideal for individuals aiming to play an active role in driving innovation, whether through new product development, strategic design initiatives, or transformative problem-solving across industries. Graduates will leave with valuable, transferrable skills suited for leadership roles in design, innovation consultancy, or creative industries.
