COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Translation Studies at Bangor University is structured across three semesters to combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience. In the first semester, students engage with core modules that provide the theoretical and methodological foundations of translation studies, including research methods and an introduction to the development of the discipline, alongside an optional module of choice. Semester two focuses on professional practice, allowing students to develop and refine their skills through modules such as Translation in Practice and Translation Portfolio, supported by an additional optional module. These modules enable students to explore various aspects of the translation profession and produce an extensive practical translation portfolio in their chosen languages. The final semester is dedicated to the dissertation, which offers students the opportunity to pursue an in-depth research project of 15,000 words on a translation-related topic or to complete a proposed translation of 10,000 words accompanied by a 5,000-word critical commentary. The dissertation encourages students to apply both theoretical understanding and practical expertise, ensuring a comprehensive mastery of translation skills. Across the program, students are supported in developing critical thinking, research proficiency, professional competence, and intercultural awareness, preparing them for careers in translation, interpreting, or related fields within the language industries.
