COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in The Celts at Bangor University is a one-year full-time or up to three-year part-time program designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of Celtic culture, history, and identity. The course is divided into two parts: a taught component contributing 120 credits and a dissertation of around 20,000 words. Part 1 covers compulsory modules such as The Celts: Fundamentals, which introduces the main sources of evidence for the Celts, including classical texts, archaeological and visual evidence, linguistic developments, and medieval and post-medieval historical and literary sources. The Creation of the Modern Celt module examines the interpretation and use of the ‘Celt’ in the modern period, exploring shifts in linguistics, archaeology, anthropology, art, music, literature, and politics, with attention to ideological and national influences. Students also select an optional module, such as Welsh Literature, which investigates medieval and modern Celtic literacy, manuscripts, poetry, prose, mythology, the Celtic Church, and visual and musical culture, fostering critical engagement with primary sources. Teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars, and practical engagement, with students developing research skills to produce their dissertation. Non-Welsh-speaking students have access to language courses to enhance understanding, and the program encourages independent research and critical analysis in a unique Celtic-speaking environment.
