COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Sociology program is structured to offer students a comprehensive and flexible curriculum, amounting to 180 credits. The course includes two core research-focused modules: Research Strategy and Design, delivered in Semester 1, and Research Process and Meaning in Semester 2, each worth 20 credits. These modules equip students with key methodologies and theoretical frameworks necessary for sociological inquiry. A significant component of the program is the 60-credit dissertation, offered in both English (SXU-4016) and Welsh (SCU-4016), which enables students to conduct an in-depth independent research project under academic supervision.In addition to the core components, students are required to select 80 credits of optional modules. At least 40 of these must come from Sociology-specific options such as Global Wales, Nationalism and Minorities, Climate Change and the Political Process, Theorizing Society, and Tackling Inequalities 2. These modules allow students to explore a range of contemporary sociological issues including identity, environmental politics, and social justice.Students may also choose up to 40 credits from a broader selection of interdisciplinary modules. These include Key Issues in Criminology, Health Policies, Youth, Crime, Vulnerability and Abuse, Transnational Crime, Comparative and International Criminal Justice, and Key Issues in Social Policy. This flexibility allows for the exploration of overlapping topics in criminology, public health, and policy, enhancing students' ability to critically engage with real-world social challenges. The course structure promotes a well-rounded sociological education, preparing graduates for careers in academia, research, public service, or policy development.
