COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Linguistics at Bangor University requires students to complete 180 credits in Year 1 through a combination of core, compulsory, and optional modules. Students with a background in linguistics, such as a BA or BSc in the field, may be exempt from taking Foundations of Linguistics and Linguistics Research Methods, and instead take more advanced alternatives such as Advanced Linguistics Research Methods or other appropriate higher-level modules with approval from the Departmental PGT lead. All students must complete a 60-credit dissertation, choosing either the standard MA/MSc Dissertation or the Welsh-language equivalent, Traethawd Hir MA/MSc.Students are also required to take a research methods module worth 20 credits. Depending on their previous academic background, they may choose between Linguistics Research Methods and Advanced Linguistics Research Methods. The remaining 80 credits must be chosen from a broad selection of optional modules that cover a diverse range of linguistic topics. These include modules such as Second Language Acquisition and Language Teaching, Language Policy and Planning, Psychology of Language, Language and Communication, EFL Theory, Language Change, Child Language Acquisition, Historical Linguistics, and Speech Science. Additional options include modules in cognitive and brain research, as well as Welsh-language options on bilingualism.This course offers students the opportunity to explore empirical and theoretical aspects of linguistics while tailoring their study to specific areas of interest. The flexible structure is designed to support both students new to linguistics and those seeking to deepen existing knowledge. The program equips students with valuable research and analytical skills, preparing them for further academic study or professional roles in education, language policy, communication, and related fields. With research-informed teaching and supportive faculty, the MA in Linguistics provides a rigorous yet adaptable environment for postgraduate linguistic training.
