COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in History at Bangor University offers a comprehensive and flexible program that enables students to build advanced skills in historical analysis, research, and interpretation. Designed for those with a strong interest in historical study, the course balances core academic training with the opportunity to explore specialised topics. Students are required to complete 180 credits, beginning with the compulsory module “Themes and Issues in History” which provides a broad foundation in current historiographical debates. This is followed by the “Research Skills” module that equips students with essential methodological tools and techniques for conducting independent historical research.A significant element of the program is the 60-credit dissertation, which allows students to carry out an in-depth research project on a topic of their choice under expert academic supervision. Students must also take one of two “Documents and Sources” modules—either focused on modern or medieval and early modern periods—which trains them in the critical use of primary sources.In addition to core modules, students choose two specialised options that reflect diverse historical themes and geographical areas. Options include modules such as “World Heritage,” “People, Power, and Political Action,” “Nationalism and Minorities,” “Global Wales,” and “Understanding the Middle Ages.” Students may also opt for a work placement module, either in English or Welsh, gaining valuable practical experience relevant to historical research and heritage sectors. The structure of the program ensures that students gain both breadth and depth in their historical knowledge, supported by rigorous training in research and analysis. By the end of the course, graduates will have developed the intellectual and practical skills necessary for further academic study or for professional roles in education, heritage, policy, or cultural sectors.
