COURSE CURRICULUM

The Global Heritage MA program offers a comprehensive exploration of cultural heritage management and theory, grounded in both global and local perspectives. The core modules are designed to equip students with an in-depth understanding of how heritage functions in practice. The World Heritage module provides insights into the nomination, management, and planning processes of World Heritage Sites, using nearby examples such as the Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd and the Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales. The Cultural Heritage module engages with current debates on the definition and contested nature of heritage, examining international measures for safeguarding both tangible and intangible cultural assets. Research Skills training further enhances students' capabilities by offering advanced instruction in research planning, public history, policy writing, oral history, archival methods, and media communication, contributing to employability and academic development.A 60-credit dissertation module allows students to conduct original research in a chosen area of interest. Additionally, students can select 40 optional credits from a diverse range of modules. These include a practical work placement in the heritage field, and theoretical modules such as Theory and Interpretation in Archaeology, Country House Life, Global Wales, Understanding the Middle Ages, Nations, States and Empires in the Pre-Modern World, and Nationalism and Minorities. These modules span disciplines including history, archaeology, and cultural studies, encouraging interdisciplinary thinking. Topics range from elite social structures, national identities, and global heritage narratives to material culture and minority rights. This combination of academic and applied learning ensures graduates are well-prepared for further study or a career in the heritage, cultural, or academic sectors. The course fosters critical thinking, practical engagement, and a deeper appreciation of the complexities of heritage in contemporary society.
