COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in English Literature program consists of 180 credits and offers a wide-ranging exploration of literature across historical periods, genres, and global contexts. A central component of the course is the 60-credit Postgraduate Dissertation (QXE-4090), which enables students to undertake independent, supervised research on a literary topic of their choice, helping them to develop advanced research and critical analysis skills. The remaining 120 credits are made up of taught modules that reflect on different conceptions of the world, structured around key literary themes. In Semester 1, students take modules such as Other Worlds (QXE-4070), which explores imaginative and speculative fiction, This World (QXE-4060), focusing on realist literature and its engagement with everyday life, and Critical Theory Practice and Research (QXE-4015), which introduces essential frameworks for interpreting texts and conducting literary analysis.In Semester 2, students continue with modules including Future Worlds (QXE-4080), examining utopian, dystopian, and science fiction narratives, Into the World (QXE-4020), which explores migration, diaspora, and global connections in literature, and Past Worlds (QXE-4039), which delves into historical fiction and literature’s relationship with heritage and memory. Through this course, students gain insight into how literature responds to cultural, political, and environmental challenges. They also develop a suite of transferable skills such as research, communication, and critical thinking, all of which are valuable for careers in education, publishing, media, and the arts. The program fosters a supportive academic environment with small class sizes, allowing for close engagement with faculty and peers. Students benefit from opportunities to participate in masterclasses, seminars, and research center activities, deepening their understanding of key literary debates and broadening their academic and professional horizons.
