COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Criminology and Sociology is structured in two parts, combining taught modules with independent research. In Part 1, students take 120 credits from a range of modules designed to develop advanced knowledge and research skills. Core modules include Research Process and Meaning, which provides postgraduate-level training in qualitative and mixed methods research, data generation, and analysis techniques, including NVivo software, while exploring the philosophical underpinnings of research design and reflexivity. Comparative and International Criminal Justice examines the operation of criminal justice systems in the UK and other countries, offering an international perspective. Key Issues in Criminology addresses police work, public perceptions of law enforcement, responses to crime, and media portrayals. Transnational Crime focuses on offences crossing national borders, such as human trafficking and cybercrime, while the Nationalism module explores identity construction and societal impacts. Additional modules may cover Climate Change and the Politics of Climate Justice, Key Issues in Social Policy, and Theorizing Society and Politics. In Part 2, students undertake a 60-credit research dissertation under the guidance of a tutor, allowing them to pursue empirical or theoretical research on a chosen topic. Part-time students can select subjects related to their professional practice. The dissertation, typically around 20,000 words, enables students to develop specialised expertise and demonstrate independent research skills.
